Many people defer cleaning the washing machine until an unpleasant odour starts emanating from it. This indicates that mould has developed inside. This problem occurs in many homes, but it can be solved easily.

You can find many products dedicated to cleaning washing machines in shops. Don’t want to spend money? Try one of the home methods. You only need a few ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen or bathroom.

Put this in the washing machine instead of baking soda. You will get rid of the bad smell

Baking soda is a versatile product with broad applications. You can add it to baking or use it to clean and disinfect surfaces. It has antibacterial, antifungal, and whitening properties. It can successfully clean the washing machine; however, this method doesn’t always work. Sometimes, baking soda can’t deal with the unpleasant smell.

Most people turn to vinegar in such a situation. Like baking soda, vinegar has disinfecting, whitening, and fungicidal properties. Simply pour it into the detergent compartment and set the programme to a temperature no lower than 140°F. Vinegar combined with hot water will get rid of the mould and dirt. This trick has one major drawback—the smell of vinegar lingers for many hours.

However, another method eliminates the need to use baking soda or vinegar. You need two things—a lemon and a tube of toothpaste. Citric acid dissolves limescale and removes mould, and the toothpaste thoroughly cleans the drum and leaves the washing machine with a pleasant, minty smell.

How to do it? Remove the laundry and place a halved lemon and half a tube of toothpaste in the drum. Close the door and set the programme to the highest possible temperature. After the washing cycle, your washing machine will shine cleanly. Repeat the procedure once every three months, and you’ll forget about mould.

How to clean the washing machine?

Cleaning the washing machine should not be limited to the drum but should include the door and seals. Dirt from fabrics accumulates inside the seal and can turn into mould over time. Before cleaning, take a paper towel, soak it in hydrogen peroxide, and then wipe the inner part of the seals and the door. Hydrogen peroxide will remove mould spores and all other dirt.
