"Severance" is an Apple TV+ series that was a true revelation. Not only is it produced and directed by Ben Stiller, an actor often associated with light-hearted comedies, but the screenwriter, Dan Erickson, is a debutant. This duo has created a work that captivated audiences worldwide despite minimal promotional support from the platform, which is not mainly known for pushing its titles.
"Severance" - what is the series about?
The titular severance is performed on new employees at the mysterious Lumon company. It involves separating the consciousness outside the company from that within the office. While at work, employees have no idea who they are outside, whether they have a family, or what their life is like. When they return home, they know nothing about what they do in the mysterious office building or what happens to them there. Some choose this to forget about suffering and loneliness for at least eight hours, while others believe the system helps them work more effectively.
"Severance" was acclaimed as the best series of the year at the first edition of the Top Series poll and garnered 14 Emmy nominations this year.
"Severance" second season is not everything?
To the delight of all viewers, the second season has been announced, and even the strikes in Hollywood haven't hindered its prospects. The premiere is now set for 17th January on Apple TV+. The cast is also confirmed: alongside Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, and Zach Cherry, Gwendoline Christie, known from "Game of Thrones," joins the ensemble.
In a conversation with Indie Wire, Mohamad El Masri, co-producer and co-screenwriter of the series, revealed that Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller have "mapped out" the future storyline.
- There was always a thinking ahead to future seasons. Even in Season 2, we were talking about, what is the end game and how does this show end? A lot of work was talking about that. I think there’s a natural overlap that happens, especially with the second season of a show, that you’ve got to keep [the momentum] going. People are interested, people are watching, and now with Season 2, you really have to sort of think about, not just what is Season 2 going to deliver in a satisfying way, but how does this set up Season 3 and beyond?
Viewers will have to wait three years from the first to the second season; will it be the same for the third?
- That’s something I can’t ultimately talk about. I will say, will it take another 3.5 years for the show to come out with Season 3? I mean, I hope not, just as a fan. I hope we don’t have to keep ourselves waiting for that long. But, you know, it’s Hollywood.
He also added: - What I would say is that Ben and Dan and the entire team, they’re perfectionists and they want it to be great. And if that takes, you know, a year, two years, three years or whatever it’s going to be, they’re just going take the time they need to make it the show that they want, and clearly that’s paid off and in a remarkable first season. I feel like Ben and Dan and everyone, they’re not going to put something out that they don’t feel is amazing.
What does Apple TV+ say? Traditionally, no comment is given.
