Russian governor critically injured in stabbing at public meeting

The governor of the Murmansk Oblast in the Russian Federation, Andriej Chibis, was stabbed in the abdomen during a meeting with residents. His condition is critical. The attack occurred in the city of Apatyty. The assailant has been detained.

The assault happened on Thursday evening during a previously arranged meeting with the residents of Apatyty in the Murmansk Oblast. “The attack took place at the exit of their building, the Stroitel Cultural Center. The attacker was detained – a witness informed the Interfax agency.

Governor stabbed

The witness added that Chibis, after the attack, managed to make his way to a car by himself. The governor was then taken to the Central City Hospital in Apatyty.

“The governor is alive, and the assailant has been detained. His motives remain unknown,” the TASS agency reports. The arrest was executed by officers of the Russian Guard, who were securing the area in front of the building.

The Baza channel released a photo from the hospital showing the governor lying in bed.

The assailant sustained a head injury during the arrest. According to the Baza channel, the apprehended individual is a 42-year-old resident of Apatyty. The man had previously been penalized for crimes involving bodily harm.

On Friday, around 5 am Greenwich Time, the hospital where the governor was receiving treatment reported that the politician had undergone complex surgery. His condition is critical.

“He is in intensive care, actually very fortunate that the aorta was not harmed,” the hospital's chief doctor mentioned.
