Russia lost another aircraft in the Donetsk region, which was shelling territory controlled by Ukraine. It crashed after being shot down by its own forces, the Russian military – reports Ukrainska Pravda, citing a source in the Ukrainian Air Force.
The incident took place near Kostiantynivka in Donbas.
Traces of destruction
Photos shared on social media platforms reveal the wreckage of an aircraft that, after being shot down, struck a house, causing it to catch fire. One of the videos shows two Russian fighter jets flying in the same direction, with one suddenly shooting down the other.
What is Russia's next target?
The latest intelligence update stated that on 1 October, Russia took control of Vuhledar in the southern part of the Donetsk region, which lies at the intersection of two key fronts – Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk. The capture of the town followed a renewed campaign by Russia in September, and by the end of the month, its forces had nearly encircled the town, leading to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces.
It was noted that for the past two years, Russia had made sporadic attempts to capture Vuhledar, suffering heavy losses. The town is located on elevated ground, which aided defence by Ukrainian forces.
It is assessed that in the coming weeks, Russian forces are likely to attempt to continue their advances beyond Vuhledar, and to the west, a likely target is the locality of Velyka Novosilka, which lies along the main road T0509, and 8 kilometres to the north is the locality of Bohoyavlenka.
