On Slovak television, Robert Fico stated that he would participate in ceremonies dedicated to the Soviet military's Carpathian-Dukla Operation of 1944 on Sunday. This is to "show that he does not forget that freedom came from the East."
Will there be a scandal? Fico's firm declaration on Russia
The Prime Minister of Slovakia further revealed that in May 2025, he plans to visit Moscow for the 80th anniversary commemoration of the end of World War II in Europe. "Who will stop me from attending a peace rally?" asked Fico.
The Slovak politician's declaration may cause consternation in the European Union. Since February 2022, Russia has been involved in the conflict in Ukraine, after which it became somewhat of a pariah on the international stage. However, in recent months, Vladimir Putin has found quiet allies, including Hungary and Slovakia.
In an interview on Slovak television, Fico commented on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He revealed that he repeatedly tells Ukrainians that he cannot comprehend why "they keep killing each other with the Russians." "We are where we were two years ago. The Russians have more territorial gains. We have hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers. And there is no military solution in sight," he added.
The head of the Slovak government asserted that every conflict ends through negotiations, and he will personally do everything to ensure that after peace is achieved, his country maintains normal relations with Russia.
Fico's statements came as Slovakia and Ukraine are preparing for a joint session of their governments. At this meeting, the politician is expected to discuss the necessity of maintaining oil and gas transit through Ukrainian territory.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia simultaneously assured that his country fully supports Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Therefore, he anticipates Kyiv to behave "normally and reasonably" in terms of sharing its transit infrastructure.
Fico also addressed the subject of the presidential elections in the USA. In his opinion, Ukraine would benefit from Donald Trump winning, as the Republican candidate's presidency might increase the chances of ending the conflict.
