Russian drones breach airspace of Moldova and Romania
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, reported a violation of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones. The Romanian Ministry of Defence reported a similar incident.
President Maia Sandu announced on Thursday morning that Russian drones had breached her country’s airspace. She shared this information on social media, attaching a photo of a fragment from a destroyed drone.
"The Republic of Moldova has not attacked anyone; we have not entered any foreign territory, nor have we engaged in conflicts with other states. Our constitution enshrines our neutrality. The Republic of Moldova has always advocated for and contributed towards peace. Nevertheless, Russian drones and bombs are falling and detonating in our villages. It must be acknowledged that we lack the necessary capabilities to defend ourselves against them," she wrote.
Two drones fell on Moldovan territory. "One fell on a field near Ciumai in Taraclia, and the other exploded on a field near Ceadîr-Lunga. The areas have been cordoned off, and there is currently no danger to the public," Sandu emphasised.
This is not the first time Moldova has encountered such incidents. In October last year, authorities in Chișinău reported missile remnants found near the Ukrainian border.
Incident in Romania
Also on Thursday, the Romanian Ministry of Defence reported a potential airspace breach by Russian drones. According to their statement, the incident took place during a night-time drone raid by the Russians over Ukraine.
Two drones may have entered Romanian territory, with details of the event forthcoming after thorough examinations of the site where one of the drones crashed.
