russia finds success in riyadh talks; us diplomacy falters

During talks between representatives of the United States and the Russian Federation in Riyadh, Moscow achieved its objectives, while Washington did not secure any successes, assessed Keir Giles from the British think tank Chatham House. The meeting was the first of its kind since the commencement of Russian aggression in Ukraine three years ago.

On Tuesday in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, envoys from Russia and the United States sat at the negotiating table. It was the first meeting of its nature since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and its main focus was the conflict in Ukraine.

Analyst Keir Giles from the British think tank Chatham House emphasised that the Americans accomplished nothing. The British analyst commented that he observed analysts did not anticipate the meeting benefiting anyone other than Russia.

Russia gains from talks, returning to the international stage

"Russia achieved precisely what it intended to achieve, and the United States, unsurprisingly, achieved nothing. Neither for itself nor its allies," said Giles. Initial messages from the talks suggest that Russia has regained the status of a nation worth engaging with.

According to Giles, the talks in Riyadh were the fulfilment of a promise made by Trump to Putin. Russia returned not as a war criminal but as an equal partner meeting with the U.S. president.

This was Russia's primary goal when it initiated these talks. Thus, three years after the aggression against its neighbour, the Russian leader managed to alter his position in the international community.
