"Rome cannot remain silent in the face of the brutal murder of Alexei Navalny, the most courageous, heroic opponent of Putin. We fervently hope all political parties welcome our request," stated councillors Valerio Casini and Francesca Leoncini, along with the head of the Roman branch of Italia Viva, Marco Cappa.
The capital addendum of the newspaper "La Repubblica" highlighted that politicians from the Radical Party were the initial proposers to change the name of the street hosting the Russian embassy.
A tribute to Putin's criminal opponents
The group reinforced that "the only way to pay tribute to Putin's criminal adversaries is to immortalise in history the memory of those who, opposing the regime, sacrificed their lives."
"So, we call upon the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri," expressed the Italian Radicals. "We ask him to rename Via Gaeta, where the Russian Federation embassy is situated, to Alexei Navalny Street."
On Monday evening at the Capitol, the location of Rome authorities' offices, a rally in honour of Navalny will be held. It will feature representatives from all the prominent Italian political parties, both the coalition and the opposition.
