Although cooking fava beans seems simple, there is a way to make them even tastier and more delicate. The key is one simple addition that can work wonders. See how easy it is to prepare fava beans that will impress everyone.

Why is it worth eating fava beans?

Fava beans are a delicious addition to summer dishes and a rich source of valuable nutrients. They contain, among others:

  • Fibre: aids digestion and intestinal peristalsis,
  • Protein: essential for building and regenerating tissues,
  • Potassium: regulates blood pressure and heart function,
  • Magnesium: reduces stress and improves mood,
  • Calcium: strengthens bones and teeth.

Fava beans are also low in calories - 100 grams (about 3.5 oz) have only around 90 kcal. Regularly eating fava beans can help with weight loss, lower bad cholesterol and sugar levels, and keep you full for a long time.

How to cook fava beans to make them perfect?

Cooking fava beans is very simple, but to get the best result, it’s worth using a few simple tricks:

  1. Rinse the fava beans thoroughly: Rinse the beans thoroughly under running water to remove any impurities.
  2. Add salt and bicarbonate of soda: Add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to boiling water. Salt will bring out the flavour of the fava beans, and bicarbonate of soda will help them retain their beautiful green colour and keep them from being tough.
  3. Cook at the proper heat: Cook the fava beans on medium heat for 15-20 minutes. Do not cook them too long, as this will cause them to lose their firmness and flavour.
  4. Add spices: You can add other spices, such as bay leaf, allspice, caraway seeds, or pepper, to the fava beans when they are being cooked.

Additional tips:

  • To make the fava beans even more tender, soak them in water for a few hours before cooking.
  • If the fava beans have tough skins, gently cut them with a knife before cooking.
  • Cooked fava beans can be used in salads, soups, casseroles, or as a standalone meal addition.

By following these simple tips, you will surely cook perfect fava beans that will delight you with their taste and tenderness. Enjoy!
