North Korean troops captured in Ukraine: A tense breakthrough
"Our soldiers have captured North Korean military personnel in the Kursk region," announced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday.
"This was not an easy task," he emphasised.
"Our soldiers have captured North Korean military personnel in the Kursk region. Two soldiers, though wounded, survived and were transported to Kyiv, where they are now communicating with the Security Service of Ukraine," wrote Volodymyr Zelensky on the X platform on Saturday.
The President of Ukraine noted that capturing Kim's soldiers was challenging. "This was not an easy task: Russian forces and other North Korean military personnel usually execute their wounded to erase any evidence of North Korea’s involvement in the war against Ukraine," he emphasised.
Zelensky also shared photos of the captured individuals. These images also reveal the conditions in which the prisoners are held.
"I have instructed the Security Service of Ukraine to grant journalists access to these prisoners. The world needs to know the truth about what is happening," he added.
North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region
These are the first North Korean soldiers to be captured. Previously, only recordings of their activities or the failures of their operations were available online.
According to available data, up to approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers are believed to be involved in the fighting in the Kursk region.
This week, photos have also emerged confirming that, in addition to personnel, heavy equipment from Pyongyang has reached the front. Images from the battle area showed the involvement of North Korean Koksan M-1989 howitzers.
