NATO issues a warning to Russia over drone found in Romania. Investigation is ongoing
In Romania, the remains of a Russian drone have been found. Three unmanned aerial vehicles are said to have appeared in Romanian airspace. "These acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous," said a NATO spokesperson, quoted by Reuters.
The remains of a Geran 1/2 (Shahed) drone were found near the town of Plauru, close to the border with Ukraine. Over the past two nights, Romanian authorities have issued security alerts related to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure along the Danube.
During field investigations that began yesterday, 24 July, by specialists from the Ministry of Defence, the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, remains of a Russian-origin Geran 1/2 drone were identified in the vicinity of Plauru in Tulcea County. The ministry said in a statement that the investigations will continue. It was noted that drone remains were found in one of the three designated locations. It was added that all risk areas are located outside inhabited areas.
Fighter jets scrambled. NATO responds
The Ministry also reported that due to the Russian attack on civilian and port infrastructure targets in Ukraine, carried out on the night of 24-25 July near the border with Romania, Finnish F-18 fighter jets were scrambled from the airbase near Constanța as part of the Air Policing mission.
A NATO spokesperson commented on the incident, stating that there is no indication that a deliberate attack on alliance territory took place.
"While NATO has no information indicating any intentional attack by Russia against Allied territory, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous," he said in a statement, quoted by Reuters.
