Moscow amps up air defence for Victory Day celebrations
On Thursday, May 9, in the capital of Russia, a traditional parade will be held to mark the anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. According to Anton Heraszczenko, an advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, citing Russian media, Moscow's air defence will be bolstered, and drone jammers will be employed on this day.
Victory Day, celebrated on May 9, is the premier national holiday in the Russian Federation, rallying Russians behind Vladimir Putin. The day marks the conclusion of the Great Patriotic War, which is the term used in Russia for the period of World War II from June 22, 1941, when Nazi Germany attacked the USSR, to May 9, 1945.
In mid-March, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu revealed that over 9,000 soldiers and 75 units of military hardware would be showcased at the parade held in Red Square, Moscow. The Russian Air Force is also set to participate in the event.
Russians gear up for Victory Day with enhanced air defense in Moscow
As noted by Anton Heraszczenko, an advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, citing Russian media, extra air defence measures and powerful drone jammers will be in operation on the day of the festivities.
The police are mandated to search all residential buildings near key roads and areas of mass gatherings.
