The national team goalkeeper has died. He was 26 years old
The goalkeeper was most popular in the Balkans and the UK. Since 2019, he had played for the Montenegro national team. Prior to this, he started his career in English clubs, including Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, Stoke City, and Birmingham City. His last club was Millwall FC. Matija joined our Academy in 2015 and spent five years with the club, during which time he made his full international debut for Montenegro, before departing in the summer of 2020. Until the last moment, nothing foreshadowed the tragedy. Sarkić played his last match just under two weeks before his death. On 5 June, he guarded Montenegro's goal during a game against Belgium. Although the Balkan team lost, sports journalists praised the 26-year-old's performance and dedication.
However, Matija did not participate in the next match against Georgia, as he prematurely left the national team training camp, explaining his decision by going on holiday. He died while on holiday in Budva, surrounded by friends. The cause of his death was reported to be a sudden illness.
Montenegro did not qualify for the Euro 2024 tournament. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper's death is a massive blow to the team, fans, and his relatives.
