A new rule has been introduced to Microsoft Edge, making it possible to discard tabs that have been put to sleep automatically. This feature allows Edge to save even more RAM, a useful option for those who tend to open dozens or even hundreds of tabs simultaneously.

Edge users can now download Release 125 Beta, which introduces a significant new feature - according to Windows Latest. The browser now has a mechanism for automatically discarding tabs previously in a sleep state. While a sleeping tab in Edge uses a minimal amount of RAM and remains active in the background, a discarded tab is completely removed from RAM but must be refreshed to be viewed again.

By activating the new RAM care rule, Edge will automatically discard tabs that have slept for at least 36 hours. This is an ideal solution for users who often have a large number of open tabs and struggle with managing them.

When a tab is discarded, it frees up all the occupied RAM but Edge won't close the tab automatically - it will remain visible on the tab bar and can be accessed again.

Crucially, Edge's settings provide options for detailed configuration of how tabs go to sleep. Users can determine after how long of inactivity a tab is put to sleep and compile a list of exceptions. Sites on this list will never be put to sleep (or subsequently discarded), allowing them to always use RAM and run in the background.
