Hungary condemns alleged Ukrainian attack on TurkStream pipeline
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto criticised the alleged Ukrainian attack on the TurkStream gas pipeline infrastructure on Monday. This pipeline transports gas from Russia through the Black Sea to the European part of Turkey, and then further to the EU. Szijjarto described it as an attack on Hungary's sovereignty.
On Monday afternoon, Szijjarto referred to the information provided by the Russian Ministry of Defence. According to these reports, Ukraine allegedly attacked the Russkaya compressor station in the Krasnodar region, which is crucial for the operation of the TurkStream pipeline.
"The TurkStream pipeline is indispensable for natural gas deliveries to Hungary, and this route has operated reliably for many years," Szijjarto wrote on a social media platform.
"Attack on sovereignty"
The minister noted that both suppliers and transit countries have so far adhered to their commitments. Hungary expects that the security and operation of this route will continue to be ensured.
"The security of energy supplies is a matter of sovereignty, therefore any action threatening the security of our energy supplies should be considered an attack on sovereignty," he added.
On the night from Sunday to Monday, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine, using 110 drones targeting, among other things, energy infrastructure. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that Ukrainians attacked a gas compressor station supplying the TurkStream gas pipeline. Kyiv has not yet commented on these reports.
