Homemade popcorn: A cinematic snack made easy

Popcorn, or roasted corn, is for many of us the quintessential snack for watching a film. It is satisfyingly crunchy, perfectly salted, and has a unique flavour. Moreover, preparing it is remarkably simple.

Planning a film night in the comfort of your home and can't imagine the experience without crunchy popcorn? You can easily prepare this snack yourself, and the result will be comparable to that from the cinema.

Roasting corn kernels on a pan

Popcorn is roasted corn kernels to which you can add salt and butter. The sweet version of this snack is certainly less popular. Although it is primarily associated with the cinema, you can just as easily make it at home. To prepare popcorn on a pan, you only need corn kernels and oil and salt. Simply heat the oil well in the pan, then add the corn kernels, cover with a lid, and heat on a fairly high burner setting.

Sweet popcorn

Once the kernels heat up, they will start popping, and your popcorn will be ready. At this point, hold the lid tightly, as the popcorn will fill the space in the pan. After roasting all the kernels, transfer the popcorn to a bowl and sprinkle with salt. Optionally, you can add a knob of butter. For a sweet version, you can drizzle the popcorn with homemade caramel. How to make it? Pour 100 grams of sugar onto a heated pan. After a few minutes, when the sugar starts to caramelise, reduce the heat and stir vigorously. Add a tablespoon of cream or mascarpone, stir again, and pour over the popcorn.

Popcorn in the microwave

You can also prepare popcorn in the microwave. There's no need to buy special microwave popcorn for this. You can opt for loose corn kernels and use microwave-safe zipper bags. These bags are reusable, saving you money and reducing waste. Instead of bags, you can use a baking sleeve. Pour the kernels into the bag or sleeve and seal tightly. Place it in the microwave for a few minutes. Once all the kernels have popped, you can prepare a bowl for your popcorn.
