An employee of the airline clarified why the airplane crew always individually greet passengers as they board. The reason is more complex than it might seem.
Flight attendant Rania, known on TikTok as @itsmekikooooo, revealed that greeting passengers is not merely a matter of politeness.
"Your cabin crew greets you not only out of courtesy but also to check if you are too drunk or unwell to fly," she explained.
Additionally, the crew observes passengers to identify those who could assist in an emergency situation during the flight.
Identifying aggressive passengers
The purpose of the greeting is also to identify passengers with whom there might be issues during the journey because they provocatively display aggressive behaviour or acts. Such individuals may threaten the safety of the flight, and therefore, in cases of obvious risk, the crew might intervene before take-off.
Internet users quickly shared their insights. One user wrote: "I had pancreatitis while in Corfu. I pretended everything was okay when boarding because I knew they wouldn’t let me on otherwise."
Another person recalls a humorous situation: "Once, I had to undergo a breathalyser test because I said goodnight to a really pretty flight attendant when she said hello. I was sober."
Picking "helpers"
Another internet user, a flight attendant, commented: "We look for anyone who hasn’t got any mobility issues, can speak English, looks like they will be able to open a door and ideally travelling alone."
As you can see, the greeting by the cabin crew has a much deeper meaning than just a kind gesture.
