'The New York Times' highlights that Germany has initiated preparations for decades-long stand-off with Russia, focusing on politicians' statements in the process.
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has started cautioning that Germany must promptly rebuild its armed forces. This is all in the event that Vladimir Putin does not halt at the border with Ukraine.
However, ever since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, most Germans have grown used to the notion that the nation's security will be ensured by cooperation with Russia and gain access to an open Chinese market - assesses 'NYT'.

The head of the Territorial Command, Lieutenant General André Bodemann, days prior, introduced to the German Press Agency (dpa) a blueprint for improved coordination of actions between security services, crisis response, and industrial guards.
Dmitrij Peskov responded to these remarks. He stressed that Moscow will meticulously scrutinise these intentions due to "Berlin's antagonistic disposition".
