Russia might attack NATO territories as early as 2026, according to an analysis by German intelligence reportedly circulating among members of the federal government. The outlined conclusions have "leaked" to journalists of the German Business Insider.

War in Ukraine: the most important information in our live coverage

Based on the quoted document, Russia is preparing for large-scale conflict with the West. This preparation is evidenced by the reorganization of Putin's army, the deployment of military units, positioning a larger number of missiles in the western part of the country, and an increase in arms production.

According to the supposed report, the surge in weapons production could result in the doubling of Russia's military strength within the next five years, particularly in the realm of conventional weapons.

2026 - a key date?

The report suggests that Russia might target at least part of NATO territory "from 2026 onward," such as the Baltic countries or Finland. It notes that German intelligence services have not yet publicly issued a warning about this matter.

Business Insider reports that NATO command is worried about Russia's growing military power and the potential for confrontation. However, some NATO country leaders believe that this escalation does not necessarily mean war is inevitable.

Business Insider also refers to the assessment of American intelligence agencies which, "in the medium-term perspective," do not see the danger of a Russian attack on NATO. They believe that Putin's army will need an additional five to eight years to regain the military potential it had before the invasion of Ukraine.
