Data from the American company AdImpact, which monitors advertisements, suggests that as election day approaches, nearly a billion dollars was spent on political ads just last week, reports CNBC.
The website clarifies that the precise amount from the last seven days is about £828 million, highlighting that the presidential race drew the most significant investments. Over £227 million was invested in ads for the Kamala Harris and Donald Trump campaigns. The remainder was spent on lower-level elections—gubernatorial and congressional—across the country.
As CNBC points out, this is not the end of the spending spree, as over £250 million has already been reserved for future ad time from Sunday to Tuesday.
AdImpact calculates that the advertising campaign for Republican candidate Donald Trump slightly exceeded, from 27 October to 2 November, the ad spending of Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign, with figures ranging from approximately £36 million to £34 million.
Both campaigns are bolstered by several so-called Super PACs, election committees that support candidates but are formally independent of them. These entities are often associated with billionaires. Moreover, as CNBC notes, the Democratic Super PACs aided the party in slightly surpassing Republican spending during this period in the presidential race.
