Files by Google integrates Gemini AI for smarter PDF searches

The updated Files by Google app now features a new overlay integrated with Gemini AI. Users can use it to search the content of PDF files and ask questions about their content. This is especially helpful for lengthy documents.

Details about the new feature are reported by 9to5Google. The new feature will please Gemini users who frequently use a similar AI querying feature for screen content. Browsing PDFs is particularly beneficial for long documents, such as user manuals or extended presentations. In the pop-up window, you can pose a question, and an answer will be provided shortly.

The information obtained from Gemini can later be copied or directly shared. This way, elements searched in PDFs can be conveniently used in emails or messaging conversations.

Interestingly, at launch, this new feature will work exclusively in the Files by Google app and, unfortunately, will not be available in a similar document browser operating within Google Docs. However, it can be safely assumed that this is just a prelude to further development of the Gemini overlay, and ultimately the functionality will be expanded.

To use the new option in the overlay, you need to launch Gemini after the desired PDF has already been opened in Files. According to 9to5Google, the new option is visible after updating the Google app to version 16.0.5 or newer.
