Among the numerous spices hidden in kitchen cabinets lies a true gem that often goes unnoticed and underappreciated. Fenugreek, as it is called, consists of unassuming seeds that have been used for centuries in both culinary and herbal medicine. Although it is mainly associated with oriental cuisine and Mediterranean dishes, its potential is much broader. Apart from adding a depth of flavour to dishes, it has remarkable health benefits that can provide relief for various ailments such as blood sugar issues, indigestion, or excess weight.

Fenugreek - A long-forgotten spice

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is an annual plant from the legume family, whose seeds have been used for centuries in both medicine and cuisine. For centuries, it was considered a treasure among spices, but today it often lies forgotten in kitchen cabinets. This unassuming plant, however, has much to offer.

It is known by many names such as holy clover, Greek hay, and even Greek buttercup. In its natural habitat, it grows in the Mediterranean regions, but in the UK it is primarily cultivated as a forage crop. Fenugreek hides within it flavour and health properties that are appreciated worldwide.

Health benefits of Fenugreek

Fenugreek has found extensive use in traditional medicine. Its health-promoting effects were known as far back as ancient times when Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used it to treat various ailments and conditions. In traditional Indian medicine – Ayurveda – it also played a significant role.

Its seeds have a rich chemical composition: flavonoids, mucilaginous compounds, sterols, saponins, alkaloids, and vitamins B1 and B3. There are also minerals such as iron, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and amino acids. These miraculous seeds help lower blood sugar levels by regulating lipid metabolism. They also lower bad cholesterol levels while simultaneously increasing good cholesterol levels.

Fenugreek and weight loss – How does it work?

Fenugreek can also be helpful in the weight loss process. The fibre it contains swells in the stomach, giving a feeling of fullness and suppressing appetite. This way, we consume fewer calories and find it easier to maintain a healthy weight. Furthermore, fenugreek speeds up metabolism, contributing to more effective fat burning.

How to use Fenugreek?

Fenugreek can be used in many ways:

  • Seeds: Whole seeds can be added to soups, curries, stews, and other dishes.
  • Fenugreek flour: It can be added to baked goods, pancakes, or used to thicken soups.
  • Infusion: Fenugreek infusion can be drunk as a standalone drink or added to teas.
  • Supplements: Fenugreek can be found in the form of capsules or tablets.

Although fenugreek is generally safe, it's advisable to consult a doctor before starting its use, especially if you are taking medications to lower your blood sugar levels or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
