Blinken calls on Israel to recognise Palestinian statehood
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has highlighted the need for Israel to alter its approach towards the Palestinians and to recognise Palestinian statehood. This call comes as a ceasefire agreement in Gaza is reportedly nearing completion and is currently awaiting a decision from Hamas.
Blinken has urged Israel to reassess its stance towards the Palestinians, asserting that the annexation of territories without repercussions is untenable. He stressed that Israel should recognise Palestinian statehood, which he deems essential for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
Speaking at the Atlantic Council, Blinken referred to a ready ceasefire agreement in Gaza, pending a decision from Hamas. He underscored that Israel cannot expect Palestinians to accept the absence of national rights.
Blinken suggested that Israel should adopt a "time-limited, conditions-based" approach to Palestinian statehood. This strategy would necessitate financial aid and security contributions from other regional countries to stabilise and rebuild the Gaza Strip.
Israel - Saudi Arabia relations. Resolution of the conflict in the Gaza Strip required
The US Secretary of State also addressed the normalisation of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, noting that an agreement is within reach but hinges on resolving the conflict in the Gaza Strip and establishing a credible path towards a Palestinian state.
Blinken criticised Israeli authorities for undermining the Palestinian Authority, a move he claims fuels ongoing violence. He pointed out that Israel's military actions in Gaza only strengthen Hamas, which in turn recruits new supporters.
According to Blinken, the current situation is a "recipe for perpetual rebellion and eternal war". He reiterated that while a ceasefire agreement is "closer than ever," it still requires final approval from Hamas.
