Josep Borrell met in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. After their discussions, he highlighted the urgency of providing new support for Ukraine, pointing out that the resolution of the conflict will take place in spring and summer.
"Whatever needs to be done to launch new aid supplies for Ukraine, it must be done swiftly," said the head of European Union diplomacy, addressing the American decision-makers.
The upcoming months are crucial
Borrell emphasized that the West "must speed up." "We need to boost our support to achieve more quickly. This is why we are enhancing our industrial defence capabilities. The United States is doing the same," he added.
Crucial months ahead
"The next few months will be critical. Many analysts are predicting a significant Russian offensive this summer, and Ukraine cannot afford to wait for the outcome of the next U.S. elections," Josep Borrell argued.
The Russian aggressor won't stop
Previously, the head of EU diplomacy mentioned that Ukraine "is the biggest and most urgent concern" for both Europeans and the mutual security of the USA and the EU.
"And the Russian aggressor will not halt. We must stop it. You are doing a lot, we are doing a lot. But I believe together we can do even more, to assist the Ukrainians during this extremely challenging time," Borrell remarked.
Along with support for Ukraine, Borrell and Blinken discussed the crisis in the Middle East, the situation in the Western Balkans, and a collaborative approach to China on Wednesday. They also talked about coordinating their actions regarding the establishment of a maritime corridor for humanitarian aid deliveries to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Borrell thanked Blinken for his "efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza".
