Sometimes, we ourselves contribute to the clogging of the kitchen sink drain. Food scraps, coffee or tea grounds, and fatty substances should not go down the pipes. Although we are aware of this, these situations sometimes just happen, leading to unpleasant odours and drainage problems. This can hinder both dishwashing and meal preparation.

Better to prevent than to call a plumber

To avoid drain clogs, it's worth taking care of its regular cleaning. You can use simple and inexpensive means, such as a solution of bicarbonate of soda and hot vinegar. Combining these ingredients causes a chemical reaction that creates a foam to remove dirt. This method works well in both the kitchen and bathroom, especially for minor organic contaminants.

In the case of more serious blockages, a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar may be ineffective. Then, special chemical preparations for unblocking pipes come to the rescue. However, they should be used cautiously, as they contain strong chemicals that can be harmful to health and plumbing if used improperly.

A remedy not just for a headache

Another method recommended by experts is the use of aspirin. Put two to three crushed aspirin tablets into the clogged drain and pour hot vinegar over them. You'll notice characteristic bubbling and smell, indicating that the mixture is working. After 15 minutes, rinse the drain with a cup of boiling water. This combination should remove dirt and neutralise unpleasant odours.

It's important!

  • Use a strainer. To prevent large food scraps and other debris from getting into the pipes, it's worth installing a strainer in the sink.
  • Don't pour fats down the sink. Fats and oils should be properly disposed of to avoid creating blockages that are difficult to remove from the pipes.
  • Regularly check the condition of the pipes. Frequent inspection of the plumbing can help detect problems before they become serious. For bigger issues, it's best to consult a professional.
