Discover the hidden health benefits of sea bass

For many years, it has been widely recognised that fish should be a regular part of one's diet. However, not everyone adheres to this guideline and often only enjoys fish on special occasions. It's worth redefining this habit by serving one of the healthiest and tastiest species from the North Atlantic for lunch.

The end of the year is a period when fish gain popularity once more. Carp for Christmas Eve, herring in oil, "fish the Greek way," and fried cod are dishes inevitably linked to the festive season. Nevertheless, it's worth exploring a completely different and somewhat overlooked species. Sea bass can win over even those who previously shied away from fish. It contains few bones, offers a unique taste, and is packed with nutrients.

Although there are many species of fish, several people stick to only a select few. Unfamiliar choices deter some, while others complain about poor availability. Sea bass doesn't feel particularly foreign, yet not everyone is immediately drawn to it, often opting for salmon, pollock, or cod instead. It's worth giving it a try as it can pleasantly surprise with its flavour.

The BBC has prepared a ranking of the most nutritious foods. Sea bass ranked highly, with an impressive score of 89 out of a possible 100, clearly indicating its exceptional nutritional value.

Why is sea bass so valued? Primarily because of its richness in essential nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of our bodies. Its meat contains high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are pivotal in the prevention of heart disease.

It is also an excellent source of vitamin D, essential for the proper absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which contributes to healthy bones and teeth. Additionally, it provides vitamin B12, crucial for the nervous system's functioning, as well as other B vitamins that influence energy metabolism. With the addition of selenium, a potent antioxidant, along with phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and iron, you are left with a true nutrient powerhouse in a white fillet.

How to prepare sea bass?

Sea bass is an excellent choice for those who appreciate delicate, white meat. It also has very few bones, making it a pure delight to eat.

One of the most popular ways to prepare sea bass is by baking. Rub the cleaned fish with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. You can add fresh herbs, garlic cloves, and pieces of butter inside. Then, wrap the fish in foil and place it in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius. You can also add vegetable pieces. The baking time depends on the size of the fish, but it usually takes around 20-30 minutes. Sea bass also tastes excellent when fried in a pan or steamed.
