John Tinniswood was born on 26 August 1912 in Liverpool. He passed away on Monday, as confirmed by his family to the British media. He spent his final years in a care home in Southport, England, according to reports from FoxNews. The cause of death was not disclosed.
His last day was surrounded by music and love, the family said in a statement, while extending gratitude to everyone who cared for him during his 13-year stay in the care home.
Tinniswood was also the oldest living World War II veteran. He was awarded the title of "Oldest Living Man" on 3 April 2024, following the passing of Venezuelan Juan Vicente Pérez, who died at the age of 114.
When asked about the secret of his longevity, he responded: "It's pure luck. You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it." He did not follow a special diet, eating what others did, but every Friday he treated himself to the traditional British dish of fish and chips.
The oldest man in the world has died: what he avoided
Although he did not adhere to a strict diet, he abstained from addictions and favoured moderation. "If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much — if you do too much of anything — you’re going to suffer eventually," he explained in an interview with the Guinness Book of Records.
John Tinniswood outlived his wife, Blodwen, to whom he was married until her death in 1986. He is survived by a daughter, Susan, as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The Guinness Book of Records has yet to announce a new record holder in the category of the oldest living man.
