Danish MP's relationship with underage girl stirs controversy despite being deemed lawful

The story became public in November last year when Villa Fonseca, a then member of the Moderate party, publicly acknowledged his relationship with the teenager.

This situation gained significant attention from the media and stirred public debate. According to the code of conduct of the Moderate party, members are not allowed to date anyone younger than 18. The party leader stressed that by entering into such a relationship, Fonseca had violated this rule.

The affair was reported to the police to determine if there had been a breach of the law. During the investigation, Villa Fonseca took sick leave.

Investigators later concluded that there were "no reasonable suspicions" of any breach of rules.

Villa Fonseca insists that his relationship with the 15-year-old is genuine. He also acknowledges that he has been a long-standing family friend of his partner and that her parents are fully aware and supportive of their relationship.

Villa Fonseca's sick leave lasted for 2.5 months. After his return, he continued working as an independent MP. Following expulsion from the Moderate party, he attempted to align himself with the Social Democrats, Liberals, or the Alliance of Liberals, but none showed any interest in welcoming him.

"When two people are in love, conventions lose their importance. It may sound crazy. However, love doesn't conform to rules. Love has its plan for each of us and blinds us," the MP told Altinget portal.

In a conversation with Ritzau TV, Fonseca accepts the public view regarding his relationship as "unusual".

"Nevertheless, I can confidently say that both myself and my girlfriend are handling everything well. Our mutual love is supportive and beneficial for us," he stated.
