The leader of the Lebanese Shia terrorist organisation Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee reported on Saturday.

A source close to Hezbollah told the AFP agency that contact with Nasrallah was lost on Friday evening.

On Friday, the Israeli military carried out an attack on Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut. According to media reports, the entire block of buildings was destroyed. It was the largest air raid on the Lebanese capital during the year-long escalation of the Hezbollah-Israel conflict.

Operation against Hezbollah

The Israeli army reported on Saturday morning about new strikes in eastern Lebanon, targeting the Shia terrorist organisation Hezbollah.

The Lebanese parliamentarian Mark Daw said that Israeli forces struck the mountain town of Bahamdun, located southeast of Beirut.

According to eyewitnesses, smoke was rising over the southern suburbs of Beirut on Saturday after the Israeli attack, Reuters reported. Explosions were also heard in the city.

Rockets fired at Israel

Hezbollah, meanwhile, reported that it attacked the Kibbutz Kabri in Western Galilee in northern Israel with Fadi-1 rockets on Saturday in response to Israel's "barbaric" strikes on "cities, villages and civilians" in Lebanon.

According to the Times of Israel, five rockets hit deeper in northern Israel, but none were directed at Kabri.

The Israeli army reported that it intercepted five rockets fired from Lebanon in the north of the country.

Parallel strike on Hamas

Earlier on Saturday morning, the Israel Defense Forces reported that the leader of the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas in southern Syria was also killed in an air strike conducted on Friday night to Saturday in southern Syria.

Ahmed Muhammad Fahd was – according to the Israeli army – responsible for attacks on Israeli soldiers and the state of Israel, mainly through rocket fire at the Golan Heights.

"Fahd was eliminated while planning another terrorist attack in the near future," the Israeli army said.

This strike was conducted in southern Syria. Fighter jets were used during the operation, the Israel Defense Forces reported.
