Creative solutions for festive food overflow storage
Finding free space in the fridge before the holidays is already a challenge. Initially, we purchased the ingredients needed to prepare festive meals. Once the holidays have passed, we store the leftover dishes in the fridge. Consequently, both the refrigerator and the freezer soon become "bursting at the seams." How should food be stored in such situations?
Our homes become the hub of festivities during Christmas, complete with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree and a table laden with delicious dishes. Sadly, the holiday season passes quickly, leaving us with the issue of how to store dishes and foods that no longer fit in the fridge or freezer. Fortunately, there are a few practical solutions to this problem.
On the balcony or window ledge
We often treat the balcony as an extension of the fridge. It's important to remember that food placed there, such as salads or borscht, should be well protected from wind and animals. Sealable containers or additional foil can be beneficial. The balcony is a valuable storage space, but not leaving food there too long is essential. Changing weather conditions and irregular sunlight can lead to food spoilage, which may result in food poisoning.
A window ledge can be an alternative if you don't have a balcony. If it's wide enough, food can be placed on it. It's crucial to ensure stable placement and protect dishes from unwanted elements.
In search of cool places
Other places where excess holiday food can be stored include the basement, garage, or attic. These areas are generally cooler than the rest of the home, which helps preserve the freshness of dishes. It's also important to secure the food properly in these locations.
