We can, of course, opt to wash the dishes by hand or pop to the shop for new tablets, but our article will focus on what alternatives can replace typical detergents in the dishwasher and what to avoid entirely. Although homemade solutions may not work as effectively as professional cleaning products, they often provide satisfactory results.

First and foremost, it is crucial to remember that adding regular washing-up liquid to the dishwasher is a bad idea. This type of liquid produces a lot of foam, which is difficult to eliminate and can lead to problems with the appliance. In the worst-case scenario, we might end up with a kitchen full of foam.

Even if the foam does not spill out, it may remain inside the appliance after completing the washing cycle. In such cases, the dishwasher often needs to be run again to remove the foam residues, which leads to additional water and energy consumption. Excessive foam can also damage the dishwasher, and the warranty might not cover such damage.

Of course, homemade cleaning tablet versions are less effective than those purchased in the shop. They should be used sparingly because professional products contain additives, such as inhibitors, that protect the dishwasher from corrosion.

If you wish to prepare a detergent substitute yourself, you'll need 2-3 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda (to fill the tablet container about three-quarters full), a pinch of salt, and citric acid for a fresh scent. Some people use a few drops of liquid soap or washing-up liquid instead of citric acid, but be cautious not to cause excessive foaming. Bicarbonate of soda should help control foaming, but if you have concerns, it is wiser to stick with citric acid in this mix.
