At the Beijing International Auto Show 2024, a range of captivating vehicles was unveiled, with a significant spotlight on electric and combustion engine vehicles. Among the highlights was the BYD Qin LDM-i, a spacious mid-range sedan with an outstanding range and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Notably, this model is priced competitively, a common trait among Chinese automobile manufacturers.
Affordable Chinese sedan
Chinese brands have dominated the mobile phone industry and are making significant inroads into the automotive sector. Dimensionally, the BYD Qin LDM-i aligns with the standard mid-size sedan, measuring around 4.8 metres in length, 1.9 metres in width, and 1.5 metres in height, with a wheelbase of approximately 2.8 metres. This ensures ample interior space while incorporating a relatively small 1.5-litre capacity gasoline engine within its hybrid setup.
The BYD Qin LDM-i is available in various equipment levels. Features include a roughly 40-centimetre diagonal screen, NFC digital key, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and comfortable seating options. Nevertheless, when it comes to speed, it doesn't match up to the Tesla Model S Plaid or the high-performance versions of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, with power outputs of either 107 or 161 HP.
Range of around 2,000 km
Targeting economy and comfort, the manufacturer claims that the car can cover a range of about 2,000 km with a full tank and a charged battery. The plug-in hybrid system also supports driving exclusively on electric power. Fuel efficiency is impressive, with BYD reporting consumption figures of roughly 3.5 litres per 100 km, positioning this model as an excellent proposition for taxi services.
In line with Chinese product pricing strategies, this model is highly affordable. The pricing, ranging from approximately £13,000 to a little over £16,000, is significantly lower than similar offerings from European, Japanese, or Korean brands. Despite its attractive price point, whether the BYD Qin LDM-i will be available in markets outside China remains uncertain.
