The cutting board is an essential item in every kitchen. Although we use it multiple times each day, we often overlook the importance of proper cleaning. As it turns out, it can be a significant breeding ground for bacteria.

It is extremely important to wash the board thoroughly and immediately after each use to ensure hygiene in every home. Failure to do so can lead it to become a source of harmful microorganisms and quickly spreading bacteria. Preparing subsequent meals on a poorly cleaned board may have health consequences for the household.

How can you effectively clean a cutting board? There are various methods for achieving this. While a damp board can be treated with strong detergents available from any store, more beneficial solutions are inexpensive, effective, and ecological antibacterial agents. These can often be found at home.

Home methods worth using

A simple solution can also help combat bacteria on the board. Mix 120 millilitres of vinegar with the same amount of water. Wipe the board's surface with this solution, then rinse it thoroughly under running water. If there is an unpleasant smell, add lemon juice to the mixture.

Citric acid, salt, and baking soda are also effective means for disinfecting and cleaning the cutting board. Simply apply some of these substances to the dirty surface and gently rub with a dish sponge or soft cloth. All dirt and microorganisms should disappear quickly.

Be mindful to protect your hands while maintaining the board's cleanliness. Remember to wear gloves to protect your skin from irritation and premature ageing. This is especially important when using strong detergents and cleaning agents.

It's also important to avoid leaving a wooden cutting board in water for extended periods during cleaning. If soaked, such a kitchen accessory may swell and lose its properties. Moreover, we should avoid placing the board in the dishwasher.
