Brutal scenes took place on Los Abrigos beach on the southern coast of the Spanish island, witnessed by shocked families.
The man was beating his half-naked opponent with a baton, causing panic among the beachgoers. In the recording, people can be seen jumping up from their places and evacuating with children and all their belongings.
If he had taken an iron rod or a wooden stick, he would already be dead, said one of the witnesses to the fight, in a conversation with Spanish media.
According to the Spanish news service El Debate, the alleged thief, who was only wearing swimming trunks, was sunbathing and completely unaware of what was about to happen when another man attacked him.
According to media reports, police intervened and arrested the perpetrator, who claimed he had taken justice into his own hands.
He wasn't robbed. He beat the perpetrator to a pulp
The Dutchman can be seen attacking the other foreigner in the online footage. One can hear him screaming angrily and hitting him with the stick with all his might. The victim fell to the ground, tumbling over rocks as he tried to escape. The attacker paid no attention to this.
To escape the perpetrator, the man entered the water to a depth of several metres. The fearless perpetrator, despite being fully clothed, charged after him.
In photos captured by witnesses of the fight, it is evident the victim’s back had marks from the beatings and cuts. The injured man was helped by lifeguards, whose whistles can be heard at the end of the video.
Witnesses confirmed that the attack occurred as a result of an attempted wallet theft, Canarian Weekly reported.
According to reports, the man responsible for the beating was handcuffed and brought to court. He is now to undergo a psychiatric evaluation conducted by a forensic medical doctor.
