Belarus, under the rule of Alexander Lukashenko, behaves identically to Vladimir Putin's Russia. Both dictators blame almost everything on Western countries.
This time, the voice on Belarusian television was the Chief of the General Staff of Belarus, Pawel Murawieyka. He threatened to use nuclear weapons "in the event of a threat to the sovereignty and independence of the country."
One of the ultimate reasons and statements that serves as a deterrent is the return of non-strategic nuclear weapons to our country. We have learned how to handle this weapon. We can use it confidently. We can do it. You can be sure that we will do it if the sovereignty and independence of our country are threatened - "Pravda" quotes the military official.
Ukrainian media report that Belarus does not possess its weapons. They could be stationed there after being transferred by Russia. The Center for Counteraction to Disinformation under the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine reported that this might be a psychological game by the Russians aimed at causing panic, making Ukrainians believe that Belarus will join the war.
In May 2023, Putin himself announced the deployment of weapons in Belarus. He said that these would be actions modelled on the USA, which also deploys them on the territory of their allies.
Belarusian official accuses Poland of border crisis
Murawieyka stated that Belarus would become a full-fledged member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in a few days. According to him, Poland is taking actions to hinder or even prevent this move.
Furthermore, he also accused Poland of inciting and causing the situation at the Belarusian-Polish border, through which illegal migrants are crossing into Poland from Belarus.
A few days ago, the Armed Forces of Belarus reported that the West is trying to drag the country into war, and Ukraine is allegedly mobilising troops, weapons, and military equipment near the border.
