Bear's midnight escapade with a bin highlights Romania's growing wildlife issue

The footage reveals a bear making concerted efforts to break into the rubbish container, likely searching for food. The determined animal persisted in its endeavor even as the container began to roll away, walking on its hind legs while simultaneously attempting to halt its unintended escape with its front paws. Despite its persistent efforts, the bear eventually had to concede defeat.

A resident, upon spotting the bear, wasted no time in dialing the emergency services. Nonetheless, by the time the police arrived, the bear had already made its retreat back into the forest.

Bears' appearances in human-populated areas are on the rise, especially in mountainous regions. The police are urging people to keep their doors and gates closed at night and to immediately call 112 if they spot a bear near their homes.

Romania's abundant bear population

According to the Romanian Ministry of the Environment, the country is home to between 7,000 and 8,000 brown bears, making it the most populous European nation in terms of these animals, after Russia.

Data from the ministry indicates that from 2016 to 2021, 154 bear attacks on humans were recorded, resulting in 158 injuries and 14 fatalities.
