Tourists visiting for the first time often feel as though they've stepped into a fairytale city. The distinctive walls, built in the 12th century, lend character to the area and create a uniquely enchanting atmosphere.

Situated northwest of Madrid, Ávila serves as the capital of the Spanish province bearing the same name. It is primarily recognized for its remarkably well-preserved medieval city walls. These 12th-century constructions form an iconic cityscape that evokes fairytale imagery. The walls rise spectacularly from sun-drenched plains, adding an extra layer of charm to this atmospheric locale.

Magical illuminations

Having maintained its unique character for over a thousand years, the city is often described as magical. This reputation is due to its enchanting cobbled streets, numerous Romanesque and Gothic churches, and the extraordinary night-time lighting that highlights the walls.

A walk along the nearly one-mile section of the walls offers an unforgettable experience, with breathtaking views of the cathedral, Plaza del Mercado Grande, and the picturesque surroundings of the city that are not to be missed.

The walls of Ávila stretch to an impressive 1.5 miles, featuring 87 towers and nine gates. Despite their ancient origins, they remain excellently preserved and rank as one of Spain's most intriguing tourist attractions.

The monuments of Saint Teresa

The city's charm is also partly attributed to its connection to Saint Teresa, a Carmelite nun and mystic, whose monuments are scattered almost everywhere. These remind visitors of the spiritual dimension associated with this place.

One traveller on TripAdvisor remarked, "The sandcastles and walled cities you build with your children on the beach? In Ávila, they are real." Another visitor, who travelled to Ávila during a trip to Segovia, noted, "Las Murallas de Ávila is an unexpected gift for my wife and me. I hadn't realised there was such a well-preserved medieval walled city in Spain."
