Zelensky's conversation with a CBS journalist took place amidst the destruction that struck one of the neighborhoods in eastern Ukraine. However, the name of the city where the interview was conducted was not disclosed.
Commenting on the current situation at the front, the Ukrainian president assessed that his country has managed to stabilize it. As he pointed out, the current state of affairs is better than it was two or three months ago. At that time, as Zelensky emphasized, the Ukrainian army was struggling with a serious deficit of artillery ammunition.
However, the President warned that Ukrainian forces will not be able to last much longer without support from the USA and that help is needed as soon as possible, especially in light of the fact that a large Russian offensive is expected in late May and early June.
Zelensky: We need help now
Zelensky also expressed his concern that Ukrainian forces might not be able to hold their positions for an extended period without support from the United States. He stressed that assistance from the USA is crucial and should be provided as soon as possible.
"Before, we must not only prepare, not only stabilize the situation because our partners are sometimes satisfied that we stabilized the situation. But I say that we need help now," Zelensky announced, noting that "we hardly have any artillery left."
He added that the Russian Federation "definitely" benefits from the halt in weapon supplies from the USA resulting from the ongoing deadlock in Congress regarding the aid package for Ukraine. In his opinion, the most needed are missile defense rockets and artillery ammunition.
"The war may come to Europe"
Asked whether he still holds his previously expressed opinion that without support from the USA Ukraine will lose the war, Zelensky responded affirmatively, although he noticed that "it's not that simple." However, he added that in case of Ukraine's defeat, the war "may come to Europe and to the United States." "It could come to Europe very quickly," he evaluated.
He also said that Vladimir Putin will never forgive the West for leading to the fall of the Soviet Union. "We do not need to seek to change his views. We need to replace him. We need to substitute him," Zelensky stressed.
