Zelensky subsequently appointed 51-year-old Oleksandr Lytwynenko, the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, to this role.

The reasons behind the Ukrainian president's decision remain unclear.

Career of Oleksiy Danilov

Originating from the Luhansk region, 61-year-old Danilov began his political journey there. He first served as the mayor of Luhansk and was later appointed as the governor of the now Russian-occupied Luhansk region. Furthermore, he was a member of the Supreme Council of Ukraine.

Since 2019, he has held the role of the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

Who is Danilov's successor?

Oleksandr Lytwynenko, who replaces Danilov, has led the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine since July 2021. Prior to this, he directed the National Institute for Strategic Studies and, from April 2014 until August 2019, served as the deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
