An extraordinary event occurred on the waters of Tahiti during the final day of the surfing competition at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Spectators focused on the competition between Tatiana Weston-Webb from Brazil and Brisa Hennessy from Costa Rica, who were battling in the semi-finals and witnessed an enormous whale emerging from the water.
The sight delighted the on-site spectators and photographers and was hailed as the "Olympic moment of a lifetime."
The presence of wild animals during surfing competitions is not unusual. Surfers worldwide encounter birds, seals, and even sharks. However, a whale appearing during such a prestigious event is a rarity that will certainly remain in the spectators' memories for a long time.
Encounter with nature
Tahiti, where the Olympic surfing competitions were held, is almost 16,000 kilometres from Paris. The island is known for gathering whales during the mating, birthing, and migration season. Tahiti also boasts several protected marine areas, which help maintain biodiversity and preserve these majestic mammals.
In April this year, leaders of indigenous communities of the Pacific, including from Tahiti, signed a treaty recognizing whales as "legal persons." Although such a declaration is not yet reflected in the legislation of participating countries, it is an important step toward protecting these animals.
