Volkswagen faces closure of first European factory since 1988
The Belgian plant manufacturing the Audi Q8 e-tron might be the first of Volkswagen Group's factories scheduled for closure. The company is increasingly struggling to find a potential investor.
"There is no potential investor for the production site, and so the active search for an investor has been concluded," an Audi spokesperson quoted by "Automotive News Europe" stated.
The team responsible for finding alternative uses for the Audi factory in Brussels has not found an effective solution that would allow the plant to continue operations and preserve jobs in the near future.
"The 'new' Audi Q8 - facelift unnecessary but essential"
Problems at the Belgian factory were first reported in July 2024. At that time, Volkswagen Group representatives announced that they were considering closing the plant, which employs 3,000 people, due to low demand for expensive electric models.
The SUV Q8 e-tron is manufactured in Brussels, and production is scheduled to end in March 2025. What will happen next? There's little time left, and the company still does not have a concrete plan. The threat of the factory's closure is becoming increasingly serious.
The Belgian plant could be the first European Volkswagen Group facility to close as part of cost-cutting measures since 1988.
