Homemade layered wafers are a dessert that is always associated with childhood and family celebrations. They are quick to prepare, delicious, and perfect for any occasion. Due to the simplicity of this recipe, we can reminisce about the times when our grandmothers made such treats. The wafer dessert with powdered milk is also an excellent choice for hot days when we prefer not to use the oven. Discover how to prepare this delicacy that will delight the entire family.

Wafers – A classic dessert that never fails

Wafers are a versatile base that pairs perfectly with various creams and toppings. In this recipe, the key component is the filling made from powdered milk, butter, and cocoa. The preparation begins by melting butter with milk and sugar. We heat the mixture without bringing it to a boil, which helps retain the delicate flavour and smooth consistency. After adding cocoa, the filling gains an intense chocolate aroma that complements the crispy wafers beautifully.

It's important to remember that the secret to a velvety filling lies in gradually adding the powdered milk. Slowly mixing in subsequent portions ensures a perfectly smooth texture without lumps. To thicken the filling, it's best to set it aside for a few minutes before spreading it on the wafers. Additionally, a tart jam, such as blackcurrant, balances the sweetness of the cream, adding boldness to the dessert.

Recipe for perfect wafers

Ingredients for wafers with powdered milk:

  • 1 package of wafers (about 170 grams),
  • 200 grams of butter,
  • 1 cup of sugar (250 grams),
  • a little more than 1/2 cup of milk (175 millilitres),
  • 1 heaping tablespoon of cocoa,
  • 3.5 cups of powdered milk (340 grams),
  • optionally: tart jam, such as blackcurrant.

Preparation:

  1. Prepare the filling: Melt the butter, sugar, and milk in a pot. Add the cocoa and mix thoroughly. Set aside to cool.
  2. Add powdered milk: Gradually add powdered milk, constantly stirring until you get a smooth mixture.
  3. Assemble the wafers: Spread the prepared filling on the wafers, layering them. You can add some jam between the layers.
  4. Chill: Chill the prepared wafers in the fridge for a few hours to let the filling set.

Layered wafers are more than just a dessert – they are a flavour that brings back memories of family holidays and moments spent around the table. This classic recipe can be successfully modified by adding favourite ingredients like nuts or dried fruits. Wafers are perfect not only as a sweet snack but also as an elegant dessert for various occasions.
