At least 57 people have been trapped under a snow avalanche that descended on a national highway in Badrinath Dham, in the state of Uttarakhand, in the northern part of the country, according to Indian media reports. Local authorities have indicated that a rescue operation is underway connecting Mana to Ghastoli. The services are trying to locate people buried under the mounds of snow.

Uttarakhand, known for its mountainous terrain, often experiences extreme weather conditions that challenge rescue operations. The current priority is to quickly reach the victims and provide them with the necessary assistance.

Residents of the region are advised to avoid travelling in the avalanche-prone area. The situation is unstable, and further snow slides may occur, potentially resulting in more casualties.

The snow slipped on Friday after heavy snowfall. The victims are primarily workers employed in road maintenance.

The workers were clearing the road of snow when an avalanche descended on their campsite, which was set up close to the work site. Emergency services, the local community, and humanitarian organisations hurried to help. Several people have been rescued so far.

Officials reported on Friday that more than 55 workers were trapped under the snow on a national highway in Uttarakhand after an avalanche descended on Badrinath Dham following intense snowfall.

The Border Roads Organisation's administration and teams rushed to the site to conduct the rescue operation. As disaster management secretary Vinod Suman stated, the operation aims to search through the snow mound. Rescuers estimate that more than 40 people may still be under the snow.
