India weighs F‑35 offer as Moscow's grip weakens

India has received an offer from the USA to purchase fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, while Russia is offering the Su-57E with the possibility of local production. Moscow has dominated the Indian arms market for years, but the war in Ukraine has weakened its position.

India faces a key decision regarding the modernisation of its air force. For two decades, it has purchased most of its armaments from Russia, but after the invasion of Ukraine, its approach is beginning to change. Two proposals are in play for the multi-billion-pound contract for fifth-generation fighters:

  • F-35A – the American stealth fighter, which the USA is offering to India for the first time,
  • Su-57E – the Russian aircraft, which Moscow is proposing to supply along with full technology and the possibility of production in Indian plants.

India turns away from Russia

According to experts, India is increasingly distancing itself from Russian suppliers and seeking alternatives. The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President Donald Trump indicates that the American option is gaining significance. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35, has already expressed readiness to cooperate.

We are encouraged by the recent announcement by President Trump to provide the F-35 to India. We look forward to working closely with both governments on upcoming strategic procurements, including the fighters, Javelin and helicopters that will further empower the Indian Armed Forces with 21st-century security solutions and deterrence capabilities to address their pressing needs, he said.

Meanwhile, Russia hopes that the proposal to assemble the Su-57 at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will entice Indian authorities. So far, Algeria is the only foreign user of this model.

India's decision will be crucial for the future balance of power in the region and geopolitical relations between the USA, Russia, and China.
