The United States secretly sent Ukraine in March ATACMS long-range missiles with a range of up to 300 km. The information was confirmed on Wednesday by Jake Sullivan, a National Security Advisor of the White House - reports the Reuters Agency.
"We have already sent a number of them. We will send more now as we have additional authorizations and funds," said the American official quoted by AP. ATACMS missiles were included in a new military aid package recently approved by Congress and signed by United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday. According to information provided by Reuters, Sullivan confirmed that a "significant number" of missiles had been delivered to Ukraine.
ATACMS fell on Crimea
A White House advisor also reported that ATACMS had been used twice already. Kyiv used them for the first time on April 17th during an attack on a Russian airport in Crimea. The weapon was used a second time this week against Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine - reports Reuters.
"Ukraine has committed to using ATACMS missiles only within Ukraine. However, the appearance of missiles with such a range could pose a significant threat to Russian ammunition depots in the rear," claims the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Experts believe that the ATACMS long-range missiles "will allow Ukrainian forces to threaten a wider set of Russian targets deep in the rear, and Ukrainian forces can use the ATACMS to cause more serious damage to Russian logistical facilities and critical bridges along key Russian communication routes (GLOC)."
