US deploys THAAD missile system in Israel amid tensions

During a visit to Kyiv, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that the advanced THAAD missile defence system, dispatched by the US military, has already arrived in Israel and is "ready" for use. In some respects, this weapon exceeds the capabilities of the highly regarded Patriot system worldwide.

The United States Secretary of Defence has not yet verified whether the THAAD system has been deployed by Israel. However, he emphasised that the US remains capable of activating it swiftly. This marks the first occasion the THAAD system has been stationed in Israel for combat purposes; previously, it was only sent for training exercises.

The THAAD system is already in Israel

Austin cautiously expressed his views on the potential Israeli attack on Iran. He remarked that it's challenging to predict precisely how such an Israeli attack might manifest, adding that Israel will make the final decisions. Austin also emphasised that the United States will endeavour to ease tensions in the Middle East and expressed hope that both sides will begin a de-escalation process, allowing further developments to be observed.

A system superior to the Patriot?

According to earlier information from the Pentagon, THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is intended to bolster Israeli defence following missile attacks from Iran, which took place in April and October. Israel was targeted by, among others, ballistic missiles. Approximately 100 American soldiers will operate the THAAD system, deployed specifically to Israel for this purpose.

The THAAD system was developed to intercept short- and medium-range ballistic targets. It possesses greater interception capabilities than the Patriot system but is considered a complement to it.

The THAAD system can destroy targets at distances of 145-195 kilometres and at altitudes of up to 145 kilometres. The built-in radar allows for searching, tracking, and identifying objects within a range of up to 1,000 kilometres.
