US base in Iraq hit by rockets; UK anti-immigrant riots escalate; London's dolphin found

It happened while you were sleeping. Here is what global agencies noted from Monday night to Tuesday morning.

SOUTHPORT, ENGLAND - AUGUST 05: Members of the community arrive ahead of a vigil to remember the victims of last week's knife attack near the Atkinson on August 5, 2024 in Southport, England. One week ago, three young girls, Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, were killed, and several other people were seriously injured, when 17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana went on a stabbing spree in a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport. The incident, as well as false information that the suspect was an immigrant, sparked a wave of anti-immigrant protests and riots across the UK. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

  • Anti-immigrant riots continue in the United Kingdom, which erupted after the murder of three young girls in Southport near Liverpool. On Monday, the seventh day of protests, the most serious riots occurred in Plymouth in southwest England and in Birmingham in central England. Several police officers were injured in Plymouth.
  • Two Katyusha rockets were fired towards the Ain al-Asad Air Base in Anbar province in western Iraq, where U.S. troops are stationed. One of the rockets hit the base. At least a few soldiers were injured.
  • Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin could not enter Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was scheduled to attend a ceremony on Monday to commemorate Serbian victims of the Second World War. According to Elmedin Konaković, head of BiH diplomacy, Vulin submitted his request to enter too late.
  • The story of a dolphin that had been frequently seen in the Thames in London since Thursday was covered by the media for several days. This marine mammal entered the Thames for unknown reasons and most likely got lost. Unfortunately, this story does not have a happy ending. It turned out that there were two dolphins. On Monday, their remains were found on the riverbank.
