Romania to strengthen with F-35 fighter jets
The Romanians will have to pay more and wait longer. Interest in these American fighter jets is very high, and most interested countries must accept long "queues".
The agreement between the United States and Romania is valued at $7.2 (£5.5) billion. As highlighted by the DefenceRomania portal, it includes not only fighter jets but also logistical support, training services, flight simulators, and ammunition (air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles). The first delivery of F-35A fighter jets to Romania is expected in 2031.
"Romania is a key NATO Ally in promoting security and stability in the Black Sea region and beyond. The F-35As will provide Romania with unparalleled air defence capabilities and enhance interoperability among NATO air forces," said Kathleen Kavalec, US Ambassador to Romania.
One of the best fighter jets in the world
In 2023, Romania announced decommissioning of most Soviet-era weapons, including MiG-21 fighter jets. Until the arrival of the F-35A, the strength of the Romanian Air Force will be composed of three squadrons of F-16 fighter jets, including 32 units purchased from Norway.
The F-35A is a multi-role fighter with stealth characteristics (reduced detectability in flight). It measures over 49 feet in length and almost 36 feet in wingspan. It can reach speeds of Mach 1.8 (over 1,240 mph) and operate at altitudes up to 49,000 feet.
The F-35A's standard armament includes a 25 mm cannon, but it is also configured to carry external armaments (weighing up to 8 tonnes). These include AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9X Sidewinder, AIM-132 ASRAAM missiles, and cluster or guided bombs. Simultaneously, it is a fighter jet equipped for electronic warfare.
