Do you use public transportation? If you've ever stood next to an elderly person, you've probably noticed the distinctive "old person smell." Scientists have uncovered the reason behind this scent, and it turns out it's unrelated to hygiene.

"Old age is no joy," goes a Polish saying. Both the body and mind age, leading to issues with memory or movement. Walking a few miles can feel as daunting as an "Iron Man" challenge. Yet, another aspect draws attention - the old person's smell.

Researchers have figured out what causes the emission of this characteristic, sweet smell in the elderly. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with poor hygiene or neglect. The cause is more mundane than one might think.

Where does the "old person smell" come from?

Think back to your grandparents' house. Upon entering, you were likely greeted by a distinctive, sweet smell, hard to put into words. The same scent can be detected in public spaces like stores, pharmacies, or on the bus. What is the source of the "old person smell"? This was the question a team of scientists from Yokohama, led by Dr. Shinichiro Haze, sought to answer.

In 2001, they conducted a study that was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. They discovered that the characteristic scent is caused by a compound named 2-nonenal. The concentration of this substance naturally increases with age, making it an unavoidable process.

Is everyone doomed to have the "old person smell"? According to the Yokohama researchers, it largely depends on one's lifestyle. Key factors include a healthy diet, avoiding harmful habits like alcohol or smoking, and maintaining low-stress levels. These can all influence the scent's intensity.

How to eliminate the smell of an older person from an apartment?

Regardless of age or social status, most people desire to live in a clean and fragrant apartment. This includes older individuals who may hesitate to invite family due to a specific smell. How can you get rid of the old smell in an apartment? If you’re a close relative, offering to help clean is a good start.

Ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned, and wash curtains and carpets. Proper ventilation is also crucial. Consider giving your grandparents a fragrance lamp or an electric scent diffuser as a thoughtful gesture. However, it's important to remember that the smell of an ageing body is beyond anyone's control, and it’s worth understanding this.
