On March 24th, Ukrainian forces were reported to have hit two Russian landing ships, the Yamal and Azov, in Sevastopol. This information was shared by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on social media. Russian authorities have not confirmed that an attack took place.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Telegram and the platform X (formerly known as Twitter), that the armed forces of Ukraine successfully attacked enemy units in Sevastopol.

The Russian side has neither confirmed nor denied the Ukrainian statement. However, the incident has been confirmed by the Nexta agency, which reported a powerful explosion in Sevastopol.

The Ukrainian Defence Forces successfully struck the large landing ships Yamal and Azov, a communication node, and several infrastructure facilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol – as stated in the declaration posted on social media.

The hits on the Azov and Yamal units have not yet been confirmed. The extent of the damage to the ships has not been reported by the Ukrainians.

Both ships were built at a shipyard in Gdansk. The Yamal was built in 1987 and joined the Black Sea Fleet the following year. Meanwhile, the Azov was constructed in 1990 at the same shipyard in Gdansk. After undergoing modernization for the experimental purposes of the Fort universal multiple-channel missile system, it became the first and only ship of its kind in the Black Sea Fleet.

The Yamal, measuring 369 feet in length, could reach speeds of up to 18 knots, carrying up to 500 tonnes of equipment and cargo and accommodating 225 marines. Meanwhile, the Azov, also 369 feet long, is capable of accommodating 87 crew members.

The Ukrainians report that they also targeted the enemy's critical infrastructure. This was confirmed on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) by analyst OSINTtechnical.

During the missile attack on the temporarily occupied Crimea, three Storm Shadow missiles reached their target. (...) the missiles likely hit the main communication center of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. Satellite images were shown as evidence - according to the bielsat.eu page.
